HOW HOME HEATING AFFECTS HUMIDITY

Have you been wondering if your home heating equipment has anything to do with the humidity level inside your house? It very well could. However, the heating system may not be the cause of the high or low humidity levels.

Dry skin, chapped lips, sinus infections, and other problems are a sure sign that you don’t have enough humidity in your home. Conversely, wet walls, damp carpets, peeling ceiling texture, and mold means there is too much humidity.

Before we explain how home heating affects humidity, it will help to know a little more about different furnaces, how they operate, and how the installation can cause humidity levels to change. You may then know more about your furnace and if it is causing the problem.

First, it’s good to know that the two types of heating systems are the atmospheric combustion furnace and the sealed combustion furnace. Then, you can learn some basic information about how these heating systems may affect humidity.

Atmospheric Combustion Furnace

An atmospheric combustion furnace creates combustion by drawing air from the outside. Cold outside air is actually pretty dry during the winter. By pulling the dry air in and blowing through the house, the humidity levels can really drop. Anytime you blow warm air over moisture, it is going to dry out some. But by also pulling in the air that is already dry, the effect is increased.

Sealed Combustion Furnaces

Sealed combustion furnaces are completely sealed from the outside. It still needs air for combustion, so a PVC pipe is routed to the outside of the house. With this type of furnace, there is no significant influx of outside air. However, blowing warm air over existing moist air can dry it out.

It May Not Be Your Furnace

We are constantly changing the humidity levels inside our home by cooking, showering, dishwashing, and other daily activities. Sometimes a high humidity level is caused because the air is trapped in the confined space. Other times it’s a crawl space moisture problem or home ventilation problem.
